What is a lacquer painting?
Lacquer paintings use wood as the medium. The artist will first prepare the wood so that
the final medium will appear as a piece of black board, smooth and durable.
Layers of coloured lacquer are then applied to the board. Egg shells and mother of pearl
are also sometime applied to some part of the artwork for additional motifs and textures.
The painting is left to dry between each application and the layers are also smoothened.
It may take several weeks or months to complete the artwork, depending on how many layers
of lacquer are applied.
The final artwork is a durable painting that is usually displayed without a frame.
Here is a sample of how lacquer paintings can be displayed.
We hope that you will appreciate this form of art from Vietnam.
